Mansaku-no-kai

Two Evenings of Kyogen at the Herbst Theatre featuring three generations of the Nomura Kyogen Family

December 6th & 7th, 2003

The celebrated kyogen company Mansaku-no-kai will begin their three-city U.S. tour here in San Francisco this December. The Company will perform two programs featuring the debut appearance of Mansaku Nomura's grandson (son of Mansai) bringing together three generations of Nomura family members.

The Mansaku company is led by Mansaku Nomura, who is widely known as the most distinguished Kyogen actor in Japan. Tracing its history back over six hundred years, Kyogen is a theatreical art form that has traditionally been performed on the same occasionas Noh preformances. In modern days, Kyogen has developed as an independent form of theater. Kyogen was among the ninteen cultural spaces and forms of expression to which UNESCO gave the title "Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity" in 2001. Kyogen itself can be said to be overflowing with humanity.

Kyogen Lecture Demonstration
with Mansai Nomura

Saturday Dec. 6, 3:30 - 5pm

SF Main Public Library - Koret Auditorium
100 Larkin Street, SF in the Civic Center Plaza

Free to the public! (first come, first served)

Theatre of Yugen, the Consulate General of Japan in San Francisco and the International Center of the SF Public Library are pleased to present a free public lecture-demonstration on Japan's traditional comedic theater form known as Kyogen. The presentation will be given by Japan's reknowned performing artist Mansai Nomura, who is an 8th generation member of the Nomura family of Kyogen performers.

Kyogen is a classic comic theater form developed under the Samurai (warrior class) during the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries alongside the dance-drama form of Noh. Kyogen plays are characterized by realism and down-to-earth humor, in sharp contrast to the lofty and minimalist tone of Noh. Young performers active today include Nomura Mansai, who participates in Kyogen performances around the world and also appears in television dramas and movies. Mansai will highlight the unique theatricality of Kyogen, illuminating the stylized voice and movement particular to the form through actual demonstration by members of the family's company. The lecture-demonstration will be followed by a Q & A period with the audience.
