Lecture Demonstration Saturday Dec. 6, 3:30 - 5pm SF
Main Public Library - Koret Auditorium Free to the public! (first come, first served) Theatre of Yugen, the Consulate General of Japan in San Francisco and the International Center of the SF Public Library are pleased to present a free public lecture-demonstration on Japan's traditional comedic theater form known as Kyogen. The presentation will be given by Japan's reknowned performing artist Mansai Nomura, who is an 8th generation member of the Nomura family of Kyogen performers. Kyogen is a classic comic theater form developed under the Samurai (warrior class) during the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries alongside the dance-drama form of Noh. Kyogen plays are characterized by realism and down-to-earth humor, in sharp contrast to the lofty and minimalist tone of Noh. Young performers active today include Nomura Mansai, who participates in Kyogen performances around the world and also appears in television dramas and movies. Mansai will highlight the unique theatricality of Kyogen, illuminating the stylized voice and movement particular to the form through actual demonstration by members of the family's company. The lecture-demonstration will be followed by a Q & A period with the audience. |
